ELECTION 2026

Election Day in Oregon: The Ballot Is Already at Your House. The Deadline Is 8 p.m.

No polling places, no lines — one deadline. Ballots must be in a drop box by 8 p.m. Tuesday or postmarked that day, Oregon's governor's race is a 2022 rematch, and the count runs a week past Election Day.

Oregon votes the way it has for a generation: by mail, at the kitchen table, on the voter's schedule. Ballots for the Nov. 3 general election reached registered voters in mid-October, and Election Day in Portland is therefore not a trip to a polling place — it is a deadline, 8 p.m. Tuesday, enforced two ways. Your ballot counts if it sits in an official drop box or a county elections office by 8 p.m., or if it is postmarked by Nov. 3 and arrives by Nov. 10.

That postmark rule carries a practical warning the Secretary of State repeats every cycle: a ballot dropped in a mailbox late on Election Day may not be postmarked until Wednesday. On Tuesday itself, the safe mail route runs inside a post office — hand the envelope to a clerk and ask for a hand postmark — but the state's advice is simpler: use a drop box. Multnomah County maintains official drop sites at libraries and the elections office across the county, and any county's drop box in Oregon will accept any Oregon ballot.

Election Day still has an in-person option for the problems that statistics guarantee: the ballot that never arrived, the one the dog signed, the address that changed. The Multnomah County Elections Division office in Southeast Portland and county offices statewide are open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. to issue replacement ballots and help voters — Oregon has no traditional polling places, but it has never left Election Day unstaffed.

The stakes at the top are national. Oregon voters choose between incumbent Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek and Republican Christine Drazan in a rematch of the 2022 governor's race, and decide whether Democratic U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley wins a fourth term against Republican state Sen. David Brock Smith. All six U.S. House seats, state legislative races, and a full slate of county and city contests, including Portland's own, fill the rest of a ballot that rewards an unhurried read.

Two closing notes from the process itself. Oregon verifies the signature on every returned envelope against the voter's registration record, and a mismatch is curable — voters whose ballots are challenged have until Nov. 24 to resolve it. And results begin posting shortly after 8 p.m. at the state's election results site, with mail ballots postmarked Tuesday still arriving for a week after. In Oregon, Election Day is the deadline. Election week is the count.
